For company’s wanting to make full use of their installed telephone solutions by having a SIP trunk provided by an Internet Service Provider to connect to the traditional PSTN network is the solution.

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a communications protocol for signalling and controlling multimedia communication sessions. The most common applications of Session Initiation Protocols are in Internet telephony for voice and video calls, as well as instant messaging all over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.

Unlike in traditional telephony, where bundles of physical wires were once delivered from the service provider to a business. A Session Initiation Protocol trunk allows a company to replace these traditional fixed PSTN lines with PSTN connectivity via a SIP trunking service provider on the Internet.

SIP trunks can offer significant cost-savings for companies by eliminating the need for local PSTN gateways and costly ISDN circuits by routing the calls over a data circuit instead.

There are three components necessary to successfully deploy SIP trunks: a telephone solution with a SIP-enabled trunks, a network edge device understanding Session Initiation Protocol and a SIP trunking service provider.
